San Gabriel River and its drainage problems :: essays research papers fc

In 1938, the San Gabriel Mountains (Los Angeles, USA) experienced overwhelming measures of downpour. This at that point prompted mass development, for example, landslides, and blaze flooding, which flushed through midtown LA, harming structures, homes and vehicles. After these occasions, a flood board was shaped, and systems of hard safeguards were set up along the long profile of the San Gabriel River. The point: decline the hydrograph, and lessen the danger of flooding. In the upper course of the San Gabriel River, the San Gabriel Dam was manufactured. This is a separating dam, and uses conduit entryways to keep enormous stones from advancing down waterway. By doing this, the measure of residue in the stream diminishes, which lessens the chance of flooding from high silt yield, and on account of a flood, there will be no hurtfully huge dregs. Issues, be that as it may, are that the speed of the waterway expanded as there is less burden to convey, which makes the disintegration procedure rare, as wearing down and corrasion can't occur. Likewise the riverbed and sneak off inclines of the waterway are exceptionally frail and can dissolve effectively from pressure driven activity. At that point there are open dam frameworks, similar to Santa Fe and Maddock, where the waterway is put away and sifted of its dregs. This offers similar advantages of the conduit entryways, be that as it may, it implies no regular levees can frame on the riverbanks. Further downstream, there are huge control dams and fake preoccupation zone waterway bowls, similar to the Wittier Narrows. At the point when the waterway starts to flood, the control dams close, and structure a boundary. This totally keeps the waterway from streaming downstream. The water is then rerouted into the counterfeit bowls, similar to the Wittier Narrows where it is put away until the waterway comes back to its ordinary level. At that point the control dams slowly re-discharge the put away water into the stream. This is successful as it forestalls the flooding entering the midtown region. It likewise takes into consideration things like hydroelectric force and water gracefully to be effectively reachable, without influencing the primary stream itself for a really long time. This issue is this can prompt the starvation of natural surroundings living close by the stream, as there is no water stream.

Essay --

Herman Melville, one of the more notable names in Gothic writing, saw the world in an unexpected way. Liberated from the Puritan talk, Melville especially appreciated the joys of the common world. Melville voyaged, and invested energy among Natives. In a few records he depicted his ideal time among them, and displayed the possibility of respectable savages past the fringes of America. Without such disaster to fuel him, Melville wrote hopeful accounts of experience and energy. The world wasn't a snare or a test, yet a rich pearl clam to be sought after and celebrated. Genuine acclaim, or if nothing else heritage, came later, with the production of Moby-Dick. A darker story, yet at the same time overwhelming with experience, Moby-Dick was without a doubt an account of disaster. Ahab, the notorious commander in the story, was driven by a fixation to chase down a whale that harmed him years before the story's start. Instead of tolerating this as nature being somewhat risky Ahab, against the better judgment of different individuals from his team, anthropomorphised the main whale, considering it to be a somebody, not something, that wronged him and des...

The concept of figure-ground perception is often illustrated with the classic faces or vases illusion, also known as the Rubin vase. Depending on whether you see the black or the white as the figure, you may see either two faces in profile (meaning you perceive the dark color as the figure) or a vase in the center (meaning you see the white color as the figure). A History of Figure-Ground Perception The concept of figure-ground perception emerged out of the field of Gestalt psychology. According to the Gestalt approach, the whole is more (or different) than the sum of its parts.?? The term Gestalt itself comes from the German word meaning form or shape. During the 1920s, a number of German psychologists including Max Wertheimer and Wolfgang Kohler began studying different principles of perception that govern how people make sense of an often disorderly world. Their work led to what is known as the Gestalt laws of perceptual organization. The Gestalt theory of perception proposes that people make sense of the world around them by talking separate and distinct elements and combining them into a unified whole.?? For example, if you look at shapes drawn on a piece of paper, your mind will likely group the shapes in terms of things such as similarity or proximity. Objects that are similar to one another tend to be grouped together. Objects that are near each other also tend to be grouped together. While the concept of figure-ground perception is an important principle in Gestalt psychology, it is usually not identified as one of the laws of perceptual organization. Figure-ground perception describes one of the most fundamental ways that we simplify a visual scene. How the Perceptual Process Works How Do People Distinguish Between Figure and Ground? When looking at a visual scene, people tend to look for ways to differentiate between the figure and the ground. Some ways that people accomplish this include:?? Blurriness: Objects in the foreground tend to be crisp and distinct while those in the background are blurry or hazy.Contrast:  The high contrast between objects can lead to the perception of figure and ground. The Rubin vase is one example.Size: Images that appear to be larger will be perceived as closer and part of the figure while those that are smaller will seem further away and part of the background.Separation: An object isolated from everything else in a visual scene is more likely to be seen as a figure versus background. Examples The faces or vases illustration is one of the most frequent demonstrations of figure-ground. What you see when you look at the faces or vases illusion depends on whether you see the white as the figure or the black as the figure. If you see the white as the figure, then you perceive a vase. If you see the black as the figure, then you see two faces in profile. Most people are able to reverse their perceptions and switch back and forth between the vase and faces images. The artist M.C. Escher famously used this concept to create a number of fascinating figure-ground reversals.?? His elaborate drawings often include clever visuals that trick the eye and create fascinating figure-ground changes. 6 Fascinating Optical Illusions

You Have Benefited From Animal Testing - Free Essay Example

If you have ever taken any type of medicine or had a vaccine, you have benefited from animal testing: Research with animals led to vaccinations against smallpox, measles, mumps, and tetanus. The worlds first vaccine was tested on a cow in 1796 during the observation of milkmaids who caught cowpox, which is now called smallpox, from infected cow utters. This disease was eradicated in 1980 with the help of lab animals. Looking at the more frequent viruses in our everyday lives like bacterial infections, which are extremely common and affect most people many times throughout their lives, today most of them are readily treatable with antibiotics such as penicillin. The effectiveness of penicillin and other antibiotics as treatments for bacterial infections was established through research using mice and other rodents. Scientists continue to use animals to determine what antibiotics are effective against specific organisms, their toxicity, and their potential side effects. Medical researchers need to understand health problems before they can develop ways to treat them. Another significant vaccine that was discovered with the service of animals in medical research was the polio vaccine. Polio is a highly infectious disease that mainly affects children under the age of 5. It invades the nervous system and can cause permanent paralysis in a matter of hours. The polio vaccine which was tested on chimpanzees, reduced the global occurrence of disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 22 cases in 2017. Polio is now practically unknown in the USA and Europe and more than 16 million people have been saved from paralysis. Animal Testing ProCon.org. (2016, March 24). Another very important discovery was in the early 1920s when Frederick Banting found the hormone insulin in the pancreatic extract of dogs. He instituted that it significantly lowered the dogs blood glucose levels to normal. Banting and his medical student, Charles Best, continued working on their discovery and perfected it in 1922. They used it to successfully treat a young boy with severe diabetes and went on to win the 1923 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. Roughly one million people in the world use insulin for their diabetes (Virginia, 2016). Thanks to lab animals, we now have important vaccines to treat everyday illnesses. (Rogers, K. 2014)
